A recent monitoring visit to three cooperatives in the Cooma Chiefdom has revealed encouraging progress in the Ubunthu Enablers-supported goat rearing project, just two months after the initial handover. The project which empowers rural women through livestock farming, is already demonstrating tangible results include the first recorded pregnancy among the goats, a key indicator of animal health and successful management.

Led by Ubunthu Enablers CEO Manfred, the monitoring team visited the Zibinge, Kabila, and Cooma Cooperatives on October 17, 2025, to assess implementation of animal husbandry practices and general project progress. The findings highlighted strong community ownership, commitment, and a clear trajectory toward long-term sustainability.

At the Zibinge Women Cooperative, the team observed goats in excellent condition a reflection of the members’ dedication and effective care. The group has also ensured proper infrastructure, including a well-built and secure goat house, and is consistently applying recommended practices such as the use of mineral blocks, which are vital for improving goat health and productivity.

Similar progress was seen at the Kabila Women Cooperative, where members have established a robust animal health routine that includes deworming goats twice a month. The women also showed a forward-looking mindset by requesting further training to build on their success.

Their capacity-building priorities include:

  • Financial Literacy and Self-Help Savings – to effectively manage and grow income from goat sales.
  • Advanced Animal Health Management – to better prevent and respond to potential disease outbreaks.

Ubunthu observes that the proactive request for more knowledge from the cooperatives is the ultimate sign of a project’s success. It indicates that the women are not just beneficiaries; they are becoming savvy entrepreneurs and custodians of their own development.”

At the Cooma Cooperative, which includes both men and women, the team witnessed impressive collaboration and shared responsibility. This gender-inclusive approach has further strengthened project implementation and livestock care.

Notably, the team recorded the first confirmed goat pregnancy a significant achievement and strong indicator of a well-managed herd, achieved in just under two months since the goats were handed over.

This follow-up visit affirms the project’s upward momentum and showcases the powerful outcomes that emerge when communities are equipped with knowledge, resources, and ongoing support.

By promoting gender inclusion, local ownership and continued learning, Ubunthu Enablers is helping to turn small-scale livestock farming into a pathway for economic empowerment and rural resilience.
