Empowering Women Through Goat Breeding: Ubunthu in Kazungula

Ubunthu visited Kazungula in March, 2023 to assess the progress of the Goat Breeding Project implemented by Youth Development Organization with support from Ubunthu Zambia. The team met with the District Commissioner, Provincial Permanent Secretary, and Council Chairperson of Kazungula to discuss the importance of the project in empowering local women with goats and business skills as a sustainable alternative to charcoal burning.

They also observed that 15 local women cooperatives had been trained in goat rearing techniques and business skills, and were yet to receive goats to start their own breeding businesses. The goats were in good health and well taken care of, with proper housing arrangements in place.

The project provided training on record-keeping, financial management, and marketing strategies to empower women to run successful goat breeding businesses. The women expressed their gratitude to Ubunthu Zambia and Youth Development Organization for empowering them with goats and business skills, which is improving their livelihoods and the well-being of their families.

The team discussed the future plans of the project with the District Commissioner, Provincial Permanent Secretary, and Council Chairperson, emphasizing the need for continued support and sustainability. The local leaders assured their commitment to supporting the project and encouraged the team to explore opportunities for scaling up the project to reach more communities in Kazungula and beyond.
