WATER CHALLENGES IN KAZUNGULA SET TO END AS SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS TAKE SHAPE

Communities across Kazungula District have long struggled with limited access to water a challenge that continues to affect both household well-being and agricultural productivity.

Following the successful distribution of goats to women-led cooperatives organized into three functional clusters by Ubunthu Enablers the urgent need for a reliable and sustainable water supply became clear. Access to adequate water is essential not only for daily household use but also for maintaining the health and productivity of livestock  especially as dry seasons become longer and more severe.

Efforts to address this need initially faced a setback when the drilling of a borehole in one of the targeted clusters proved unsuccessful due to unforeseen technical challenges beyond the contractor’s control. This experience highlighted the complexities of developing water infrastructure in rural areas and emphasized the importance of flexible and resilient solutions.

In a major and timely development, Ubunthu Enablers is pleased to announce that all partner cooperatives will now benefit from mechanized, solar-powered water systems, made possible through the generous support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing water scarcity across the district.

As part of the project, the existing borehole at the central breeding center previously operated with a hand pump will be upgraded to a fully mechanized solar-powered system. The upgraded infrastructure will include elevated water storage tanks and strategically placed drinking troughs to ensure easy and reliable access for livestock.

These improvements are expected to increase water availability, enhance animal health, and reduce the physical workload for cooperative members. The introduction of solar-powered systems is particularly important in managing seasonal water shortages, which have historically placed a heavy burden on local communities.

During peak dry periods, women who play a central role in both household water management and livestock care have often been forced to travel long distances in search of water. This new development will significantly reduce that burden, bringing water sources closer to home and improving daily life.

Reliable access to water will also strengthen livestock production, ensuring that goats remain healthy and productive even under difficult climatic conditions.

This initiative brings renewed hope to partner cooperatives and reinforces the value of integrated support systems that combine economic empowerment with essential infrastructure. As implementation moves forward, Ubunthu Enablers remains committed to creating sustainable livelihood opportunities and building resilient communities in Kazungula District.
