In a significant step towards fostering transparency and accountability, Ubunthu has officially launched the “Activating Citizen Voices for Education Project” in Choma.
The project which is supported by the Federal Republic of Germany and co-financed by the European Union under the “Enabling Access to Justice, Civil Society Participation, and Transparency (EnACT) Program, seeks to enhance the participation of citizens in governance and the fight against corruption for effective public finance management in the education sector.
The launch event, held at a Mana Nest Lodge in Choma, saw a diverse array of stakeholders in attendance, underscoring the importance of this initiative. Representing the Ministry of Education, the Choma District Education Office joined forces with Choma Municipal Council, The Anti-Corruption Commission, various Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), members of the media, and civic leaders.
The project is being implemented in 8 wards of both Mbabala & Choma Central in Choma District for 6 months ( August 2023 – January 2024).
The Activating Citizen Voices for Education Project aims to address critical challenges in Zambia’s education sector by promoting active citizen engagement and oversight. It seeks to equip communities with skills and knowledge on how to monitor public resources and participate in monitoring the utilization of public resources specifically CDF using the anti-corruption lens.
Some of the Project Activities include training of community members in Social Accountability as well as conducting Budget Tracking and Monitoring in selected schools in the target wards.
Ubunthu’s collective goal under this project is to empower citizens to become strong advocates for transparency, accountability, and good governance in education.
The launch event concluded with a sense of optimism and determination, as attendees recognized the potential of the Activating Citizen Voices for Education Project to transform accountability and transparency in the educational landscape in Choma and beyond.
