Goat Breeding

The goat breeding project progresses very well in Kazungula-Southern Zambia
During the long period of draught goats were handed over to the cooperatives to allow better care of the animals and protection from possible poaching.
Under the care of the woman goat populations have prospered. The woman have reported how the animals have changed their lives. Goat manure is used as fertilizer for their fields, milk is used to feed their babies and soon they expect to sell the first animals to generate income for their families. The training Ubunthu has provided has encouraged some ladies to start own business activities like making and selling scones.
The women have experienced a number of challenges. Due to the training women could identify diseases early and call in the veterinarian. Today the woman are very proud of the healthy animals.
One of the biggest challenges, especially during the draught, is to get enough water for the animals. Women have to walk up to 8 km to reach the next borehole, a task that takes them 4 to 5 hours every day. In response to the challenge Ubunthu has agreed to provide a second borehole (one had already been drilled at the breeding center).
Ubunthu has dedicated one person to support the current project and plan for a second one in a different area.
Ubunthu is in very regular contact with Ms. Mbozi Tatila Chairperson of Kazungula Council. Ms. Mbozi Tatila shows an eager interest in the project and promises ongoing support for Ubunthu’s activities.
