KAZUNGULA GOAT BREEDING PROJECT

Kazungula in Southern Province is a rural district and livelihood for the over 90% of the population depends on agriculture (both crop and livestock production). However, crop production usually suffers through drought or flooding due to extreme weather conditions resulting in poor crop yield leading to hunger and economic vulnerability among the women and youth who are victims of negative social vices resulting from poverty. In addition, local communities along the Zambezi River see elephants from Botswana crossing and devastating their harvests, further aggravating the situation for communities.

Ubunthu enablers is implementing a goat breeding project to enable local communities to generate additional income.
A breeding centre is set up and 17 cooperatives received 5 goats each in August 2023 for their own breeding programs.

Ubunthu has been engaged as the project enabler and provides management support for all stakeholders as well as advising on marketing and sales of the animals.
An important aspect of the project is knowledge building to provide communities with transferable skills to improve their livelihoods. So far, construction of 5 shelters has been done and stocked with goats as breeding stock, and also a borehole has been sunk to provide water to both the goats and the women at the center. Further, 16 women groups have been trained in goat management and farming as a business.
