Cooma Chiefdom, Zambia — Ten cooperatives in Cooma Chiefdom are making significant progress through the goat project implemented by Ubunthu Enablers Organisation, with members also benefiting from lessons on Farming as a Business.
One year after the official handover of goats to the cooperatives, the Ubunthu Enablers team continues to monitor the progress and positive changes taking place among the participating groups.
At the time of the handover, each of the 10 cooperatives received six goats, bringing the total number of goats distributed to 60. During a recent monitoring visit, the team recorded 20 new kids and seven pregnancies bringing the current total number of goats to 80. The goats were also found to be in good health, despite the cooperatives having experienced Foot and Mouth Disease outbreaks during the first year of implementation.
The progress recorded demonstrates the commitment of the cooperatives to managing their livestock and growing their goat enterprises. The cooperatives expressed their gratitude to Ubunthu Enablers for the project and called for continued support, particularly in animal health training and regular monitoring.
As part of its continued support to the cooperatives, Ubunthu Enablers remains committed to:
Monitoring the progress of the cooperatives and their goat enterprises;
Conducting refresher training on goat keeping and management;
Tagging goats to support proper identification and monitoring;
Providing Farming as a Business lessons to strengthen the cooperatives’ business knowledge and practices; and
Supporting animal health awareness and management.
Through the project, Ubunthu Enablers continues to promote sustainable livelihoods, livestock development, and entrepreneurship among communities in Cooma Chiefdom.
